What do you guys think of the whole Facebook backlash?

facebookgeneral chatprivacyquestion
Anyone here thinking of quitting Facebook?

I'm really not sure how much value it has to me anymore honestly. My real friends, aka the people I hang out with regularly, I communicate with via email or IM or phone. That means that Facebook becomes the place where the people from highschool that I never talked to or will ever talk to hang out. Not sure if there is any benefit to that whatsoever.

facebook jumped the shark a long time ago

all the cool kids are on bebo

Didn't Bebo die?

I like how Zuckerberg is just now saying that they'll be addressing the privacy issues.

yeah, bebo is pretty much dead

i've been getting a lot less out of facebook lately. don't really care about the privacy stuff, it's just gotten lame is all

The recent facebook changes have been flat out awful. I liked facebook in the beginning because little kids and old creepers couldn't get on it. Now it just pisses me off.

I agree, I preferred Facebook when it was exclusively for college kids. After they opened up, I felt like they'd sold out.

Right now, I see Facebook as a necessary evil. I *have* to use it, for business reasons. Really wish I didn't have to.

I get especially nervous whenever the FB makes a big privacy change. For this reason, I have a fake facebook account just for checking what randos can see on my page. There are lots of weird loopholes, like, they cant search for me, but if they find my boyfriend's page or a page that i post on, they can link to a very basic page for me. I would get rid of it but I like to be able to stay in touch with old friends and it can be useful for certain functions like "Marketplace." It just gets scary when it comes to applying for a job. Fun fact: my boss picked me for my current position and not two other people because after a simple search, one girl's profile pic was her pouring a beer on herself and one guy's was him with a bong.

Well, Facebook just made a new big privacy change. At this point, I just assume everyone can see everything.

By the way, have you all seen http://youropenbook.org/? It lets you search everyone's status messages.

Try searching for "my boss is a jerk" for example. I can spend hours on there. Fun stuff.

youropenbook is pretty awesome. i wonder how they're doing that?

Actually sorry, it doesn't let you search "everybody's" status updates, just people who got defaulted into "public" mode or don't know any better.

What kind of privacy precautions should I take at this point, if I'm looking for a job (besides putting everything on private, not default)? Like, if I erase facebook, would that even help me, or would everything be cached anyway? Also, should I even bother detagging incriminating pics, or will everyone find them anyway as well?

Detagging pics will help make it harder for people to find them (though if they know who you're friends with they could just look through all of your friends pics to see if you were in any of them).

If you really wanted to play it safe, you could just erase/deactivate your Facebook account. A couple big-name people have started doing just that.

Also, before you deactivated, you might wanna back up your photos and info in case you ever wanted to keep a hold of it for just yourself, a service called www.backupify.com does a great job of doing this and is drop-dead simple to use.

I DEACTIVATED IT
good thing i can use other people's accounts to keep stalking people

Wow... impressive. Is all this simply because of the job issue?

Also, be aware that I think they'll reactivate your account if at anytime within the 2 weeks after you deactivate it you log back in.

so mark zuckerberg was interviewed about all this privacy stuff recently and didn't give any real answers. it's painful to watch him try to speak about it.

check the vid out http://d8.allthingsd.com/20100602/d8-video-facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-on-privacy/

also, this is pretty classic.. it makes me cringe that he's sweating so much and is so goddamn awkward http://d8.allthingsd.com/20100602/whats-under-mark-zuckbergs-hoodie/

have you guys ever seen that zuckerberg conversation that was released from when facebook started? i will see if i can find it again, but his friend is basically like, so why the fuck do you have access to all this info on everyone on campus? and hes like, because they give it to me.

so, i am already missing fb. i was wondering, i have seen some people go by their first and middle name...my cousin is Sarah Diana or something instead of her real last name. does this help avert creepos and employers, or is this just useless and they will find you anyway?

I don't think de-activating is entirely necessary as long as you are smart about what you post and put in your profile. You can have a very basic profile without things being too exposed.

Facebook as created a method for you to view your profile as if you are another user, and that is one way in which you can be more confident in what people will see on your profile.

Interesting story about how 3rd party sites may "accidentally" log you into Facebook, re-activating your account after you delete it without you wanting to http://techcrunch.com/2010/06/11/calacanis-facebook-profile/

I really like facebook to be honest. But, then again I use it wisely. I don't have pictures up that my friends do of them smoking, doing drugs, or drinking. I have no clubbing pics or anything of the sort. I think the only picture I have up that could be "negative" is a picture of my tattoo, which isn't on my hands, neck, or anyplace that could hinder getting a job when I graduate. Also, I delete comments my friends leave that are vulgar or just not appropriate at all.

I try to put pics up of all my achievements... like my robotics competition pictures, all the teams I've met, awards my team and I have won etc.

I may create another work one in the future. But, for now I'm set.

On a side note, this is the first I've heard of the facebook movie. I hope that it shows the positive and the negative sides. Or else it'd just suck.

@crazybeautifulrobot i think if more people realized that stuff like facebook is basically a "resume" of sorts that anyone may look at, there wouldn't be so many problems with it.

that said, i think it's mostly just a huge time sink

@marijolisa, there's a way to check how you page will look to others from the privacy controls if you don't want to sign out and into another account
